Breastfeeding Support

Having given birth, the decision of how to feed your baby is an important one.  Your body will produce milk as a natural consequence of giving birth.  The close tie between mother and baby which was present before the birth is continued through the process of breastfeeding.  Although this process is natural, it can take a little time for mother and baby to settle into each other's rhythms and really get to know each other's needs.  These early weeks are often known as the "learning phase".  It is well worthwhile taking the time for breastfeeding to become second nature – in the same way we learn any new process.

Most mothers feel that with reassurance, support, and clear information, breastfeeding is a positive and fulfilling experience.  With this in mind, Cuidiú have gathered information from numerous breastfeeding mothers to help you through the early weeks of breastfeeding.  The breastfeeding information on this website relates to full term healthy infants.  It is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult your medical practitioners in relation to your own circumstances.

Cuidiú antenatal classes aim to empower you and your birth partner to be confident in your ability to give birth and to make informed decisions including how to feed your baby.  They offer, in a comfortable and welcoming environment, the chance to talk about any concerns you might have, to ask questions and find solutions with others who are also preparing for the birth of their babies.  The courses are relaxed and informal in small groups, usually no more than five couples.   The classes usually give women the chance to meet a Cuidiú breastfeeding counsellor who covers the basics of how to breastfeed and how to help yourself avoid problems.  Meeting a counsellor in advance often makes it a little easier to ring someone afterwards if you have a query or are seeking support.  Of course, you are always very welcome to attend any Cuidiú breastfeeding support group before you have your baby.

Mothers frequently report that postnatal support is a key factor in encouraging them to continue breastfeeding.   Encouragement and the possibility of meeting other mothers who are breastfeeding their babies in a social setting seems to be a positive factor in postnatal support - Cuidiú’s breastfeeding support groups exist for this purpose.   Co-ordinated by trained counsellors, these breastfeeding support groups provide an environment where questions can be answered in an informal and positive setting.  Cuidiú’s mission is ‘information, education and support’ for parenthood, and Cuidiú provides a supportive environment of sharing experiences and understanding, while reminding parents to trust their instincts and consider their own needs.  98% of women have the ability and potential to breastfeed, and with good support more women who start to breastfeed are able to continue for as long as they wish.

Support is available in the community from a variety of sources:  public health nurses, GPs, practice nurses and Lactation Consultants; voluntary Cuidiú Breastfeeding Counsellors or La Leche League Leaders.  You can find information about all these supports as well as useful breastfeeding literature on the HSE Breastfeeding Website - www.breastfeeding.ie.
